Liam Smith Destiny Church Rosenheim

Compatibility is a factor that shouldn’t be underestimated in any relationship, especially the one between a charity and its audit firm. Liam Smith has recently become the pastor at Destiny Church Rosenheim, part of an international network of churches. Prior to this, he was the business manager and associate pastor at Destiny Church Glasgow.

It was there that the charity’s relationship with Watson Buckle began. When the rapidly expanding Destiny Church outgrew its previous audit firm, Mr Smith realised it was time for a change.

“We needed a company that would keep pace with us as we grew,” explains Mr Smith. “We wanted people of vision who were willing to grow with us and advise us.

“Watson Buckle had experience of working with another large church. We knew that church was in a similar style and vein to ours, so we thought the firm may also be able to help us”

The accountants take care of the annual audit, and are always at the end of the telephone to chat through any issues, such as tax questions, remuneration packages and trust legal concerns.

“I feel like they are part of our team. We have a business advisory department called Watson Buckle.  I can very quickly call them up for advice, and not feel like I’m being charged by the minute as it is all included in the price.

“Watson Buckle is working with us instead of just providing a yearly audit. As part of the ongoing relationship, we have strategic meetings, as they really want to understand our church.”

“Destiny Church has the peace of mind that we have experts working with us and for us. We have the confidence to go forward with plans as Watson Buckle is in the loop.
For example, when the charity was restructured, we had a meeting with our legal team and the auditors, so we could run it past them. Getting the approval of both our legal team and Watson Buckle meant we had a professional structure behind us.”

Communication and chemistry with the partner are also important the charity, and, according to Mr Smith, they have found exactly that with Watson Buckle.

“When we purchased a new building, David went over and above what was needed to make sure it happened.

“I have already recommended the accountancy firm to another charity client who was thinking of working with them, but wanted peace of mind that it was making the right decision. Watson Buckle has proven to be a great help to us, and has taken us up a level from where we were with our previous auditors”
