New trainee Robyn proving that university is not the be all and end all

Following the recent release of GCSE results, thousands of students are contemplating their next step.

Do they stay on at school and complete their A-Levels, before going on to university, or do they venture into the big wide world of work?

Accountancy might be one profession where you would think a degree is a necessity, but this is not the case, as Bradford-based accountancy firm Watson Buckle is proving.

In July the practice recently took on new trainee Robyn Hannan, who joined straight from St Joseph's Catholic College in Bradford following her GCSEs.

Robyn, who has just turned 16, will work at the firm while studying on a three-year AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) course.

"I have chosen to work for Watson Buckle as it is a very successful business which can offer me a lot of opportunities during the time I shall be studying," she said.

"Working with a successful business, with welcoming and friendly staff, will give me huge experience which should give me a great advantage during the time I shall be studying.

"Accountancy is an extremely worthwhile and rewarding industry and as I enjoy working with figures it was a logical step for me to join an accountancy practice straight from school.

"I hope to prove that you don't have to have a degree to become a success in the accounting industry."

Managing partner Susan Sedgwick said: "Many people believe that a degree is the be all and end all when it comes to becoming an accountant, but that is simply not the case.

"Becoming an apprentice and learning on the job can actually put you in better stead than spending thousands of pounds in tuition fees.

"We are confident that Robyn will become a successful accountant and pass her AATs with flying colours, ultimately benefiting herself and the practice."
