New online joint filing service launched by HMRC
Chartered accountants Watson Buckle are informing clients of a new online joint filing service launched by the HMRC and Companies House.
In a bid to make filing easier and more efficient for companies, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has joined forces with Companies House to provide a joint online filing service for company accounts.
As part of the new online filing service, the service allows most companies with ‘straight-forward’ financial affairs to submit their statutory accounts to HMRC as part of their company tax return, and then send these accounts to Companies House.
In order to use the service, companies will need to be registered for HMRC Online Services and enrolled for Corporation Tax Online. HMRC’s Corporation Tax online filing software can then be used to submit company accounts to both organisations using the template provided on the HMRC website (www.hmrc.gov.uk/ct/ct-online/file-return/joint-filing.htm), supplying company accounts information once and then submitting them to both HMRC and Companies House.
John Kinsella, tax partner at Watson Buckle, said: “The joint-filing service is an efficient method of keeping your company accounts in order, allowing you to file your accounts quickly and easily online.”
“Most small companies will be able to use the accounts template provided in HMRC’s Corporation Tax online filing software. Those companies may also use the joint-filing facility within the template to submit their full, abbreviated or dormant accounts to Companies House.”
Companies can use the joint filing service to submit the following types of company accounts, for accounting periods starting on or after 6 April 2008:
- Financial statements to HMRC and/or Companies House.
- Abbreviated accounts to Companies House.
- Accounts for dormant companies to Companies House.
John Kinsella added: “The service also recognises that deadline dates for filing accounts with HMRC and Companies House are different. You are able to submit your accounts to Companies House at a different time to the accounts you submit to HMRC with your Company Tax Return.”
The joint filing service is available through the HMRC, Business Link and Companies House websites.
