HMRC reminds taxpayers of looming self-assessment deadline
30 November, 2017
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has issued an official reminder to self-assessment taxpayers, warning them not to miss the 31 January 2018 tax return deadline.
In a press release issued on Wednesday 29 November, the tax authority has urged self-assessment taxpayers to get their tax affairs in order today, to avoid a last-minute rush following the Christmas period.
HMRC has reiterated the fact that those filing for the first-time will need to create a Government Gateway account before they can begin completing their online return.
Angela MacDonald, Director General of Customer Services at HMRC, advised taxpayers that, in today’s digital age, self-assessment returns can be completed and filed on the move.
“Twenty years ago, filing self-assessment returns on a mobile phone would have been unimaginable,” she said.
“Today, completing your self-assessment via your Personal Tax Account can be done anywhere or at any time; on the bus, in a coffee shop or while watching TV, using your phone, a tablet or a computer… it’s now easier than ever before.”
She added: “The deadline for returning your self-assessment, and paying any tax owed, is 31 January 2018 – do it now and enjoy the festive period.”
