Areas of the UK that are more affluent have a larger number of small charities than their less well-off counterparts. That is according to evidence from the Third Sector Trends 2022 report.

In contrast larger charities have more significant impact in poorer areas. The research points out that people in wealthier areas are able to dedicate their time to charities as they are more financially secure.

In contrast larger charities become involved in areas in which there is a direct need for interventions and resources are funding is available from agencies with obligations.

In light of this, the most significant number of charities are found in the South of England with other areas having a lower concentration.

In particular, London alone has more than 38,500 charities, equalling 4.4 third sector organisations to every 1,000 people.

The second highest number of charities per 1,000 people was in the South West, which has a rate of 4.2 organisations per 1,000 people.

When, it came to the finance of these different sized organisation, the report found that micro-organisations constitute 35 per cent of the Third Sector, but they receive less than one per cent of sector income.

By contrast, the largest organisations command 72 per cent of sector income, but only constitute five per cent of organisations.
