Meet the team
directors

Managing Director
As well as leading the management of our firm, I manage a portfolio of clients across several sectors and industry types including logistics, manufacturing, construction, wholesale, and recruitment.
I act as a business advisor to a number of successful owner managed businesses in a wide variety of industries and I am committed to helping business owners put strategies in place to develop and grow their operations and I get great satisfaction from working alongside these ambitious entrepreneurs.
There is always something happening with clients’ businesses where we need to become involved and help them, which keeps the job exciting.
I approach each task as a new challenge with a desire to find the best solution for the client.
When not working with clients, I am instrumental in driving the strategic direction and operation of our practice, including motivating, and supporting our team.
Throughout my 35+ year career I have worked for a couple of mid-sized accountancy firms and a top five international practice; all roles that gave me invaluable experience and skills.
My main ambition now is to continue to develop the practice and help make it a great place where staff want to work and forge a career, and where clients actively seek us out due to our reputation for skill, professionalism, and service.
A little personal
As well as being a family man, my main passion outside work is playing golf most weekends in the pursuit of a lower handicap. I try and get in the gym two or three times a week, as well. I am also part of a small committee that organise the Hellifield Beer Festival each year, which is a great weekend for the village and raises funds for local good causes and organisations– and being an accountant, I am also the treasurer!

Personal Tax Manager
In common with many tax professionals of my generation, I started my career with HM Inspector of Taxes on the first rung of the professional/managerial ladder. Not only did this expose me to management and leadership from the earliest stage, I also benefited from a rigorous and meticulous programme of professional training, which provided me with a thorough grounding in tax law and practice, and a comprehensive understanding of the administration of the UK tax system and how it operates. This in-depth knowledge of how tax works enables me to present my clients with pragmatic “real world” strategies to help them achieve their tax objectives.
At Watson Buckle, the term Personal Tax is more far-reaching than simply helping a client with their personal tax affairs. It encompasses all aspects of tax which do not fall strictly into the category of Corporation Tax — although I am also often required to act on behalf of corporate entities.
Consequently, my professional portfolio comprises a wide range of functions, from representing clients in respect of HMRC investigations and enquiries to advising on trusts and estates as well as the provision of tax advice and planning — and providing my clients with professional support and reassurance at every stage of their dealings with tax authorities, both at home and overseas.
It’s a very varied job — tax is a complicated field, and no two clients’ needs are the same. Over the years I’ve gained a reputation for patience and empathy, and really caring about the people I work for. Consequently, I tend to be quite tenacious and determined when I represent a client, which is an approach that I’m pleased to say has frequently resulted in achieving a successful outcome on their behalf.

I work with various people, across different departments, to learn from their expertise and build a strong team connection.
I try to approach every job with the same positive attitude by working hard and being dedicated to completing the tasks to the best of my ability, no matter if it is a long-complicated process.

Tax Senior
I’ve been a Tax Senior for over twenty years, having joined the firm straight after A Levels.
Although my primary specialism is in personal taxation, particularly Self-Assessment Tax Returns, repayment claims and disclosure work, over the years I have gained considerable experience in Corporation Tax.
More recently my role has developed into a hybrid function, encompassing both tax and payroll, in order that the firm can provide our clients with a seamless service with the introduction of HMRC Making Tax Digital.
Apart from my considerable experience, I would say that my strengths lie in my highly-organised and focused approach to my work, and my determination to pursue a piece of work to its conclusion.
The main reasons I love my job are: the incredible diversity of the work — every client’s needs are different — and the people I work with. I consider myself to be very fortunate to work with such a dedicated, professional group of individuals — they certainly keep me on my toes!

My main aim is to always do a good job by delivering what a client needs when they require it the most.

Payroll Senior
I manage a broad portfolio of clients and payroll management is a complex and highly demanding specialisation.
It is a fast-moving environment that requires meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the setting-up of each payroll, managing auto-enrolment compliance, the physical processing of the payroll and executing the associated BACS payments.
Our clients trust us to get this intensive and highly complex process right first time, every time. This means setting very high professional standards for our own work within the team and establishing strong working relationships with our clients.
The things I enjoy most about my job are : the highly-talented people I work with; the excellent relationships I’ve built up with clients over the years — and the fact that each day is never the same.

Independent Financial Adviser
I started working in financial services with Lloyds Bank in 2001, initially qualifying as a regulated Financial Adviser in 2005. Latterly working within Lloyds’ offshore division in the Isle of Man, I then moved to a large wealth management organisation, where I spent 10 years advising business owners and high net worth individuals.
During my time in wealth management, I was also able to work towards realising a long-term ambition to work as an airline pilot.
Ultimately, this was a relatively short-term career change due to the demise of my employer Thomas Cook Airlines!
During late 2019 I was delighted to return to my ‘real’ profession as an IFA and I feel fortunate to be working with such a well-established firm as Watson Buckle.
Representing Watson Buckle Wealth Management, I advise clients on their protection, savings, investments, pension and retirement planning needs.
I also specialise in Inheritance Tax mitigation via the efficient use of financial services. The majority of our clients are business owners; however, we advise a wide range of clients, both business and personal.
I love meeting and getting to know new clients. It constantly motivates me to see how many talented, hard-working and successful businesses there are in our region.
I also love to see clients’ portfolios increase in value as, ultimately, that is often the barometer of our value as advisers.

Married to a primary school teacher, father to 10-year-old twins, and slave to two dogs – I don’t find a great deal of time for myself! I am an ECB qualified cricket coach and assistant coach for my son’s football team. Being a Huddersfield Town season ticket holder and keen cricket enthusiast means the occasional self-indulgence, whilst week-to-week I find peace by escaping work and family duties to run, walk and use the gym.
